What we have done in Education

One of the great challenges for those working with orphaned or abandoned children is recognising that, as these young people mature into adulthood, there is very little opportunity for them to access meaningful employment. Most of them have had a poor education at best and others have been unable to complete their schooling. This situation has become our opportunity to provide a ‘pathway to adulthood’, to equip and empower marginalised youth.

GWM ran a pilot project called Project Food Mosaic to help address this challenge until April 2015. See below for more information and click here for an April 2015 update on the conclusion of the project.

Vocational training for disadvantaged youth

In 2012 we established the ‘GraceWorks Vocational Training Centre’ in Yangon which offers young people specific training in information technology, English and various aspects of the hospitality sector. Students who complete basic IT training are offered the opportunity to complete an ‘International Computer Driving Licence’ (ICDL) certificate. ICDL programs comprise internationally recognised computer proficiency modules delivered by accredited trainers.

Supplementing this training are various personal development short courses which include life skills training, health and nutrition education and preparation for entering the workforce. CV presentations, interview practice and business training help to build the students’ confidence as they look forward to increasing opportunities in the rapidly expanding economy. The initiative is called Project Food Mosaic.

The training centre has developed strong ties with a network of businesses and other social enterprises. This enables us to offer work experience to selected students and provide access to further specialist training for those students who desire to advance their skills in sectors such as hospitality, teaching, nursing and business development.

The centre also ran a social enterprise providing traditional food market tours and Myanmar cooking classes to visitors to Yangon. The tours and classes provide the opportunity for trainees to apply what they're learning and also help cover the costs of their accommodation and training.
